Remove background noise from your audio, right in the browser

Drop in a recording, pick how strong the cleanup should be and download a clean WAV. Your file stays on your device the whole time.

Fans, air conditioning, a distant road and the hiss of a cheap preamp are steady sounds, and steady sounds are what noise reduction handles best. This tool runs the open-source RNNoise engine inside your browser tab.

Because the processing happens on your own computer, there is no upload, no queue and no size cost to us. Close the tab and the file is gone.

How to use it

  1. Choose a file

Drop an MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC or WebM file (up to 30 minutes and 250 MB) onto the box or pick it from your device.

  2. Set the strength

100 % removes the most noise. Lower values blend some of the original back in, which sounds more natural on voices that already have little noise.

  3. Compare and download

Play the original and the cleaned version side by side, then download the result as a 16-bit WAV at 48 kHz.

Getting the best result

  • Start with the strength at 100 % and lower it only if the voice sounds thin or watery.
  • Steady noise (fans, hum, hiss, room tone) is removed well. Other voices, music and sudden sounds like door slams are not.
  • Clean the raw recording before you edit, EQ or compress it. Compression raises the noise floor and makes cleanup harder.
  • Better still, avoid the noise at the source: move the microphone closer and switch off the fan before you hit record.

What happens to your file

The file is decoded and processed by your browser and written back as a download. It is not sent to Airtape or any other server, and it is not stored. You can check this in your browser's network tab: no request carries your audio.

Long files are processed in two-minute pieces to keep memory use moderate, which is why the limit is 30 minutes per file.

Frequently asked questions

Is my audio uploaded anywhere?

No. The cleanup runs inside your browser tab with WebAssembly, and the result is created on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Why is the result a WAV file?

WAV is uncompressed, so the cleaned audio is not compressed a second time. Convert it to MP3 or AAC after you finish editing.

Does it work for a two-person recording?

Yes, but it works best on one voice per file. If you recorded each person on their own track, clean each track separately.

Can it remove music or other voices in the background?

No. It is built for steady background noise such as fans, hum and hiss, not for separating voices or music.

Is it really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit, because the work happens on your device.
