Make a voice clearer with a male or female EQ preset, in your browser

Choose a voice type and an amount, compare before and after and download a WAV. Everything runs on your device.

Voices differ in where their body, mud and presence sit. A male voice usually needs its low-mid cut a little lower and its presence boost a little lower in frequency than a female voice. The presets follow exactly that, and the amount slider scales how far they go.

They are starting points. A good microphone and a quiet room matter far more than any EQ, and the right curve always depends on the voice, so listen and lower the amount if the result sounds thin or harsh.

How to use it

  1. Choose a file

Drop an MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC or WebM file (up to 30 minutes and 250 MB) onto the box or pick it from your device.

  2. Pick a voice and an amount

Male, female or neutral, then set how strongly the curve is applied. 100 % is the full preset, lower values are subtler.

  3. Compare and download

Play the original and the shaped version side by side, then download the result as a 16-bit WAV at 48 kHz.

What each preset does

Boosts and cuts are in the range of 1.5 to 3 dB at full amount.
PresetCutsBoosts
Male voiceRumble below 80 Hz, mud around 220 HzPresence around 3 kHz, air above 9 kHz
Female voiceRumble below 110 Hz, mud around 280 Hz, harshness around 7.5 kHzPresence around 4.2 kHz, air above 10 kHz
NeutralRumble below 90 Hz, mud around 250 HzPresence around 3.5 kHz, air above 10 kHz

Getting the best result

  • Remove noise first, then EQ. Boosting presence also boosts any hiss that is still there.
  • Small moves beat big ones: if you hear the EQ working, lower the amount.
  • Normalize the loudness last, because an EQ changes the level slightly.
  • An EQ cannot remove echo or room sound. If the voice sounds hollow, fix the room or the microphone distance first.

What happens to your file

The file is decoded and processed by your browser and written back as a download. It is not sent to Airtape or any other server, and it is not stored. A limiter keeps the peaks under -1 dB so the boosts cannot clip.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the male and female preset?

The cut and boost frequencies sit in different places. The male preset works around 220 Hz and 3 kHz, the female preset around 280 Hz and 4.2 kHz, and it also tames the sibilance range near 7.5 kHz.

Will an EQ fix a bad microphone?

No. It can make a decent recording clearer, but it cannot add detail that was never captured or remove room echo. A better microphone position helps more than any curve.

In which order should I process a recording?

Remove noise first, then apply the EQ, then normalize the loudness. Each step changes what the next one sees.

Does the EQ change the volume?

Slightly. Boosts add level and cuts remove it, so normalize the loudness at the end if the final level matters.

Is my audio uploaded anywhere?

No. The EQ runs inside your browser tab and the result is created on your device.
