Video Podcast Revenue Is Live: What It Changes for Recording
Two platform changes in one week moved video podcasts from a format argument to a money and measurement question, and the recording source decides how well a show can answer it.
Spotify is expanding its podcast partner program to 35 regions, adding Italy, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Poland, Chile, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas this fall. Eligible shows now earn from video as well as audio: video impressions from Premium users count toward revenue, alongside ad revenue share from free listeners. Spotify reports that its program changes lifted consumption in participating shows by an average of 45 percent.
YouTube changed what a view means on 24 August 2026. A view now counts from the very first frame, autoplay included, and that is the number shown publicly next to a video. An engaged view means watching past that frame or clicking to watch, and it is available only through the Analytics and Reporting APIs. Podtrac measured the difference: across 84.2 million views of videos posted to YouTube podcast channels on 27 and 28 August 2026, video podcast episodes kept 64 percent of their views as engaged views.
What each change rewards
Change
What counts now
What it asks of your recording
Spotify partner program
Premium video impressions plus ad revenue share, with eligibility from three episodes, 2,000 consumption hours and 1,000 engaged audience members
A full-length video version worth publishing, not a capture of the call window
YouTube view definition
Views from the first frame shown publicly, engaged views only through the API
Source files you can re-cut and re-publish when the definition moves again
Podtrac engaged views
Engaged views instead of views for videos on YouTube podcast channels
Clips cut from the original recording instead of from a re-encoded export
The right-hand column says the same thing three times. Whoever holds the original recording decides how fast a show can answer a platform change. A tool that only hands back a finished mix turns each of these shifts into a re-recording.
Why the recording source decides what you can sell
Asking for video changes the arithmetic of a stream capture. Streamed video is compressed for the call, scaled to the window and mixed down before it reaches disk. Publishing that as a video podcast means publishing what the network delivered on that day, with no route back to the original frames.
Airtape records each participant locally in the browser and keeps audio and video as separate tracks per person. The recording happens on each participant's own machine, so it is not shaped by the connection in the middle. After the session the host downloads the individual tracks and cuts the audio episode, the video episode and the short clip from one source.
Separate tracks per participant: the audio and the video episode come from one session instead of two recordings.
Local capture: a weak connection can interrupt the call without defining the stored file.
Guest link: a guest joins in the browser with a single link, without installing anything or creating an account.
Chunks uploaded during the session: the recording survives a closed tab or a dropped laptop.
Both formats from one take: the same tracks feed the podcast feed and the video platform.
A source-first checklist for an audio and video episode
Decide both deliverables before the call
Write down whether the episode ships as audio, as video or as both, and who uploads where. That answer decides how carefully the session has to be framed.
Run the pre-join check with the guest
Camera framing, microphone choice and room noise are cheap to fix before the recording and expensive to fix afterwards.
Record once at the highest quality the browser offers
Two copies of a session cost a guest twice the attention. Capture the source properly and let editing do the rest.
Confirm that every upload finished
In a local recording workflow a session is complete only when each participant's track has been uploaded and stored.
Download the tracks before the storage window closes
Keep an untouched copy of the source before editing, publishing or transcoding adds another generation.
Where these numbers stop being reliable
Three limits belong next to the figures above, and a post published by a recording tool should name them.
Spotify's 45 percent consumption increase is the company's own reported figure for participating shows. It is not an independent measurement and it does not describe every show.
Podtrac's sample covers 84.2 million views on YouTube podcast channels across two days in August 2026. It is a snapshot of one platform at one moment, not a forecast.
Engaged views are available through the Analytics and Reporting APIs, so public rankings and third-party dashboards will disagree with each other until each tool adopts the new definition.
If you record interviews on a free plan
Airtape's Free plan includes two recording hours per month, two participants in total and seven days of storage. For a show that now publishes video, that storage window is the constraint to plan around: a session is safe once its tracks are downloaded, not when the call ends.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as an engaged view on YouTube?
Since 24 August 2026 a view counts from the first frame, autoplay included. An engaged view means a viewer watched past that frame or clicked to watch. Engaged views are not shown publicly and are available through the Analytics and Reporting APIs.
Do video podcasts need separate audio tracks?
They help. With separate tracks per participant you can build the audio episode, the video episode and the clips from one session, and you can repair one person's audio without touching anyone else's.
Can a small show earn from video podcasts?
Spotify's partner program is expanding to 35 regions and pays on video impressions from Premium users as well as ad revenue share, with reported eligibility thresholds of three episodes, 2,000 consumption hours and 1,000 engaged audience members in the last 30 days.
How long are Airtape recordings stored?
On the Free plan, seven days. Hosts download the tracks after the session, so plan the episode calendar around that window and keep an untouched copy of the source.
